David’s Death Story (1 Kings 2)

Father’s Farewell – two men & crown – King David knew he was about to die. He brought his son Solomon before him to share some final guidance.

Remember Moses – path, prophet, waves – David told Solomon to follow Moses’ teachings and live faithfully. Then, God would keep his promises and bless Israel.

Life & Death – king, sword, table, bread, cup – David gave Solomon life and death assignments: honor and care for faithful men as family, but destroy violent men.

Established Throne – two crowns & cloud – God firmly established David’s kingdom through his son’s reign. David died, ending a forty-year reign as Israel’s king.

Storytellers Sight

  • What matters the most when you’re about to die?

  • Why does David remind Solomon about Moses?

  • David held unresolved vengeance in his heart. What does it feel like to hold someone in unforgiveness?

  • How did David know Joab and Shimei would eventually cause Solomon problems in the future?

  • Sit next to Solomon. What is his reaction to his dad?

  • Compare this story with David’s prayer in Psalm 40.

  • What’s your favorite story from King David’s life?

The following activities will help you remember the story, apply wisdom to your own life, and tell the story to others.
