Noah’s Sons Story (Genesis 9)

Sin Remains – grapevine, cup, wine – Noah and his family were the only people left on earth after the flood. Noah planted a vineyard and became drunk.

Shame & Honor – tent & sons – Noah passed out in his tent naked and asleep. Ham saw his father and told his brothers. Shem & Japheth covered Noah to honor him.

Slavery Curse – pit, slave, chains – Noah was furious when he awoke. His youngest son had shamed him. He declared a slavery curse on Ham’s descendants.

Wealth Blessing – house, table, bread, cup, flame – Noah declared wealth, prosperity, and God’s blessings over his two older sons. After 950 years, Noah died.

  • What elements of a tragedy do we see in this story?

  • Look at Noah and his family from God’s perspective. He just cleansed the earth; yet, sin still flourishes.

  • Compare what’s honorable vs. shameful in this story.

  • What clues in the story hint that Ham did something really bad to Noah while he was asleep and alone?

Known & Beloved Song (Psalm 139)

Devoted Companion – king, cloud, woman, flame – King David said God is always with us by his Holy Spirit. He knows our thoughts. He helps us each step of our way.

Worldwide Glory – earth, cloud, flame, stars – God’s Holy Spirit is everywhere, calling all the nations to believe. God’s Light shines brightly in the darkness.

Loving Creator – king, mother, baby, flag – God designs and creates us with love. He knows our future and guides our days. His wisdom is beyond imagination.

Holiness Prayer – serpent, sword, running man, road, city – David hated evil and cherished justice. He asked God to judge his enemies and safeguard his integrity.

Embracing Calvary Story (Matthew 26)

Devastating Destination – tears, Jesus, road, cross, cloud – Jesus went with his disciples to a garden and prepared for his crucifixion. His heart grieved deeply.

Jesus’ Humanity – Jesus, cup, God, cloud – Jesus left his disciples to pray alone. He asked God to take away the cross. Then, he fully surrendered to God’s will.

Sleeping Watchmen – disciple & tree – Jesus asked his disciples to stay awake and pray. He warned them of temptation. When he returned, they were fast asleep.

Prophesied Betrayal – Jesus, path, soldier, money bag – Jesus woke up his disciples when the soldiers arrived to arrest him, for Judas had been paid to betray him.

  • What do we learn about praying before a challenge?

  • How does it feel to be deeply troubled in your soul?

  • Jesus’ disciples had experience fishing all night. Why couldn’t they stay awake when Jesus asked for help?
