Hannah’s Sorrow Story (1 Samuel 1:1-20)

Unhappy Wife – man, mother, baby, woman – Elkanah had two wives. Peninnah had children; Hannah was barren. She was loved and blessed but very unhappy.

Family Drama – mother, baby, son, grieving woman – Hannah’s sister-wife mocked her infertility often, causing her to weep. She would not eat in her distress.

Desperate Heart – temple, praying woman, tears – One day, she visited the Shiloh temple. Hannah prayed, begging God for a son that she would dedicate to him.

Peace Blessing – priest, cloud, mother, baby – The local priest thought Hannah was drunk; but she explained her anguish. Eli asked God to give Hannah children.

Underwater Prayer Story (Jonah 2)

Humbled & Honest – whale, man, flame – Let me tell you a story about Jonah’s prayer inside a whale. God humbled Jonah in the storm. From the whale’s belly, Jonah opened his heart and prayed honestly to God.

Painful Consequences – mountain, ocean, woman – Jonah lamented his selfish decisions. He experienced the bitter fruit of his choice to abandon his calling.

Return & Worship – flame, praying man, fragrant oil – Jonah praised God for his mercy. He rejoiced in the good news that God still listens to us after we fail.

Salvation’s Sacrifice – king, pit, prophet – Jonah praised God for the sacrifices he makes to save the rebellious. God guided the whale to deliver Jonah onto dry land.

Job’s Reputation Story (Job 1:1-5)

Good Man – praying man, cloud, crown – Let me tell you a story about Job, a man whom God blessed that lost all of his wealth and everything he cared about.

Wealthy Tribe – father & children – Job was abundantly blessed. He faithfully worshiped God. He had many sons and daughters, servants, and livestock herds.

Generous Spirit – house, door, table, bread, cup – Job hosted many feasts at his house for all of his children and friends. They enjoyed life and practiced peace.

Personal Sacrifices – altar, animal, flames, smoke – Job desired above all to be faithful in God’s sight. He regularly offered burnt sacrifices for his family’s sins.

  • What do you notice about what’s important to Job?

  • What would it have been like to be one of his kids?

  • In what ways do you see Job living generously?

  • How is Job’s life/reputation similar to Abraham’s?

  • Why did Job offer sin sacrifices for his children?

  • How is Job’s background a set up for his suffering?
